Almost all graduate programs require that applicants submit GRE scores.
The GRE is an exam that tests your verbal, math and essay writing skills. It is similar to the Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT), so you should be familiar with the format. Many students take review courses, such as those offered by Princeton Review or Kaplan, to prepare for the GRE. These courses are highly recommended because by taking them you stand a good chance of increasing your score and consequently strengthening your overall application. However, these courses can be expensive. Talk to some of your administrative contacts at your university to determine if there is some funding available for GRE preparation courses. If you cannot afford the preparation course and cannot get assistance from your university, you may simply want to buy GRE review books and software from your local bookstore.
While not as substantive as a review course, reviewing on your own can certainly help to increase your score. Ideally, you should try to take the GRE the summer before your senior year because you will likely have more time to prepare. In addition, if you do not perform well, you will have ample opportunity to retake the exam.
