ELEMENT III:
Mastery of the University Environment
Freshman

A. Familiarize yourself with key individuals in your department

If you have a pretty good idea of what your major will be, it is never too soon to get know members of the administration and faculty in that department.

Introduce yourself to professors and let them know you are thinking about majoring in that field. However, before you do so, familiarize yourself with their respective educational backgrounds, research specialties, and most recent publications. This will make conversation easier and make an excellent impression.

You should also get to know the administrative staff. They can often provide information that faculty cannot. And the more information you have, the better decisions you will be able to make regarding your academic future.
