ELEMENT II:
Mastery of Your Academic Future

Freshman

B. Assessing your academic strengths and weaknesses will help you excel in your academics

It is important to identify your academic "areas of improvement."

We all have strengths and weaknesses, but many are reluctant to take an active recognition of weaknesses and then take the necessary steps to improve them. You must be honest with yourself about the subject areas you need help in.

This is particularly important when it comes to writing assignments. The ability to write well is perhaps the most important skill you must master in order to pave a smooth path toward graduate school.

As stated before, do not compare yourself to others. You should measure your progress by the metric of excellence which, in the case of writing, can be provided by your advice from your professors, more senior students and the tutors at your campus’ writing center.

Once you identify a weakness, act quickly to strengthen it. There is no shame in asking for help; however there can be shame in failing to act when help is needed.
